ACSians in Melbourne celebrate ACS Founder's Day at the Stamford
Plaza Hotel, Melbourne
The ACS Alumni in Melbourne gathered for dinner at the Stamford Plaza Hotel on 26 February to celebrate Founder’s Day. We were thrilled to have in our midst ACSians in the likes of
Eric Dana (Year of 1956), the nephew of H M Hoisington (the author of the ACS Anthem), and
Dr Mano Thevathasan. Mano’s father, Dr A W S Thevathasan, was President of the ACS OBA (1952 -1954) and member of the first ACS Board of Governors in 1955 and his grandfather,
Rev S M Thevathasan, Principal of ACS, Coleman Street.
Dr Suresh John (Year of 1978), the organiser of the dinner, surprised us with an opening address by our endeared
Mr Earnest Lau. It was a treat to listen to the message from Mr Lau relayed through a soundbite. In his address, Mr Lau congratulated “Melbourne ACSians for rallying around for this function”. He spoke of the “sentiment which ACSians have for the alma mater (which) is deep and genuine” which, he maintains, explains “our loyalty to the traditions of trust, cooperation and service” and this “ACS heritage is a valuable reminder of who we are and what we stand for.”
The evening, which included a vocal duet by young ACSians, provided everyone present the opportunity to catch up with each other and share anecdotes on life in ACS.
Though we parted at the end of the function with promises that we would be in touch again at next year’s Founder’s Day Dinner, our connection was to come sooner than we had anticipated. The weeks that followed saw the creation of an alumni networking website for the Alumni members in Melbourne. This was made possible through the expertise and resourcefulness of
Quek Joo Meng (Year of 1976). That wonderful piece of work, testimony of the camaraderie among ACSians, will surely serve to bring Alumni members in Melbourne even closer together again in a relationship which promises that “The Best Is Yet To Be”.
