The PSP encourages parent involvement with their children
and invites any parent or guardian of a student in the
school to be part of the PSP. By volunteering, you will be
demonstrating to your child the importance you place on
their education and it will boost their well-being. By
getting involved in the school and supporting student
events, you will be seen by your children as a vital and
relevant part of the school community and their lives. In
addition to being informed and connected to the school, the
PSP offers opportunities for networking with other parents.
We asked a few parents on their involvement in the PSP and
this is what they shared with us.
"When
I was first asked to join PSP my son adamantly did not
want me to be part of the parent committee in his
school. Ask him now, and he will say he does not want me
to leave! The PSP has grown to be very much a part of
school and student activities. The students realise that
we are there to support and nurture them in whatever way
we can. Whether it is working with the senior students
to welcome the Year 1s or supporting a fundraising event
for Student Council, I feel rewarded knowing that we
enrich the student body life in general and that we have
become a welcome part of the school community in working
with the teachers and staff towards common goals that
benefit all the students."
Sylvia Yeo, Co-Chair of PSP
"I
was first roped into PSP in 2007 to run a youth driven
concert. I have never really wanted to be part of a
parent committee but upon my joining the group, I
discovered I really enjoy working with the teachers,
staff and especially the students. You’d be surprised at
how much you can learn from these young people. They
have come up with some great ideas when we plan events
together and it is amazing what they can accomplish when
they put their minds to the task. It is also very
important to us that the students take away some
learning experience from the events they run with us.
Working with the students can be challenging at times
and may require one to have a lot of patience, but I
find what helps me through is remembering what I was
like when I was their age. I think what all the parents
at PSP share as a common goal in that we want to make
their school days memorable and we want to be a part of
that memory. We want them to feel proud of their school
community and to know that students, teachers, staff and
parents are really all part of an extended family."
Severin Dendroff,
Co-Chair of PSP
"I
first joined PSP in 2007 because I wanted to be a part
of my son’s school life. As time passed, I realised that
not only did it help me stay connected to him and what
was going on in the school, but I was also enjoying the
friendship and camaraderie of the other parents. It has
been a great learning experience heading the food
committee for Celefest
2009 and pitching in whenever I am needed. I have made
some good friends and enjoyed some great laughs with
parents and staff."
Jaclyn Fassler, Executive Committee
"I
joined the PSP this year but I have always believed it
makes a difference when parents are involved in their
children’s school. I have seen the benefits of this as I
have been in the St. Nicholas parent committee since
2003. Our children spend a large part of their lives in
school and it’s nice to know what’s going on in their
lives and in school. It has helped me bond with my
daughters. My youngest daughter wanted me to join the
PSP last year, but I was involved in the events for St.
Nicholas’ 75th anniversary and as you can imagine it was
a very busy year. When the parents at PSP invited me to
join the
Celefest 2009 committee it provided me with an avenue to
involve myself in ACS (International). It has been fun
getting to know the other parents on board and the staff
from the school better and I really enjoy working with
them."
