Spotlight on Teachers

ACS CrestTeachers instruct and share knowledge, motivate and inspire those under their charge. They transform and enrich lives, and shape the future by nurturing the leaders of tomorrow. With such heavy responsibilities, it is no wonder that the teaching profession is said to be the noblest of all professions; it is the profession that teaches all other professions. In this issue, the spotlight is on teachers. Read on and find out how they view their profession as they share with us their aspirations, challenges and teaching experiences.
The "Kampong Spirit" in ACS (Barker Road)!
The fabulous camaraderie amongst the ACS (Barker Road) teaching staff was well demonstrated recently when the teachers got together to put up a skit for Teachers’ Day. From what was supposed to be a simple ‘Romeo and Juliet’ story set in a kampong in 1950s’ Singapore, the teachers turned out an entertaining 20-minute original musical imbued with messages of racial harmony and our school values. The chemistry among the participants was simply magic!

Everyone in the musical had gamely agreed to be part of this first ever musical project by the teaching staff of the school. At the very first brain-storming session, all contributed to come up with the best script possible that they could think of. Every rehearsal thereafter, was filled with laughter, understanding and a genuine love and desire to do something meaningful and fun together.

The Kampong "Barkar" musical cast

Spotlight on Teachers - BarkerEveryone surprised everyone else with their hidden talents: Mr Bala could do the Bangra like a pro, Ms Sarah Chia can be angry and slap pretty loudly while Mdm Rajes pulled her classic disapproving mother dowager look really well. Backstage, Mr Prem waved his wand and a beautiful coconut tree appeared, Ms Doll Sim made a 3D Secret Recipe, while Mr Glenn Wong was the DJ magician behind all the songs and music that weaved the story together. Mrs Natalie Lim provided all with the best ever costumes and wigs! It was simply truly a display of "Kampong Barker Spirit" coming alive.

Kampong Spirit in ACS (Barker Road)Mr Chong Meng Lieng, School Counsellor: "I agreed to be part of the musical because it is a rare opportunity to interact in a fun way with my colleagues."

Mr Dennis Lin, Beginning Chemistry Teacher: "I agreed to be in the Musical because I thought it would have been a great way to spend time with my colleagues, get to see everyone in a comical and relaxed fashion and show our students that teachers do know how to have fun! In fact the interaction and silly moves and jokes that we scripted got us in stitches every time!"

Kampong Spirit in ACS (Barker Road)Mr Bala, Tamil Teacher and Subject Head of Behavioural Coaching (Acting): “What was most enjoyable was the bonding and friendships we could develop during the rehearsals and the support and encouragement given by everyone regardless of position or department.”
