Without
any doubt, the recent inaugural Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic
Games (YOG) was a huge success, given the short lead time to
organise a mega international event of such scale. Kudos to
Singapore for the superb planning and execution of the event!
And kudos also to the ACS family of schools for its multifarious
involvement in the YOG – from participation in the Olympic Torch
Relay, the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and at the sports
competition itself, to dance performances and contributions of
art pieces for the Singapore 2010 Friendship Fabric and the
Olympic Walk.
Apart from the sports participants and those who took
part in the Youth Olympic Torch relay, many of our
students and teachers were also among the 20,000
volunteers who in one way or other contributed to the
success YOG. They played a varied range of roles – from
being Victory Ceremony assistants, Accreditation
Officers, Spectator Services Officers and Flag Bearer to
providing support services and manning the cultural
booth showcasing Australia at the Games Village.
ACJC’s Gloria Ang, Yustynn Panicker and Cleo Chew were
in the limelight as comperes at some of the sporting
events, while ACS (Barker Road)’s Shane Vinodh had the
experience of his life as a hockey ball picker.
During the Judo competition, the AC Dance Society awed
the audience with their graceful moves that complemented
the art of judo. And at the Opening Ceremony which was
broadcast live to an international audience, 27
performers from ACSian Theatre were part of the
Peranakan contingent in the Welcome segment. The
stunning performance saw them dancing in their elegant
cultural costumes, walking through the reflective pool
on the Floating Platform at Marina Bay, and cheering on
the Olympic torchbearers as they ran the last stretch of
the torch relay to light the cauldron.
