ACS OBA Founder's Day Dinner
Keep On Renovating & Innovating
-
Mr Oon Jin Teik Advises ACSians
The ACS OBA Founder’s Day Dinner at the Shangri-la Ballroom was
yet another grand affair to celebrate 120 years of excellence in
ACS. The Guest-of-Honour was Mr Oon Jin Teik, Chief Executive
Officer of the Singapore Sports Council and a true-blue ACSian
from the Sec 4 Class of 1979 and ACJC Class of 1981.
In his speech, Mr Oon called upon all ACS old boys and girls to
keep on ‘renovating and innovating’ ACS to meet the challenges of
the future. Although ACS already enjoys a superb brand – the name
ACS is synonymous with ‘excellence’, the ACS Spirit is synonymous
with ‘resilience, fighting spirit and pride’, and ACSians are
synonymous with ‘leadership and comradeship’ – he urged ACSians
not to rest on our laurels.

The ACS OBA, being organizers of the event, set out to recreate
the dinner event so that it will continue to remain relevant over
future years and become a focal point of the annual celebration by
all ACSians.
New features of the event included exhibitions by the ACS family of schools, audiovisual presentations celebrating the
sporting achievements of ACSians, the launch of the ACS OBA
Affinity Credit Card, and a roll call for the best-attended
cohorts during the dinner. Entertainment for the evening included
superb performances by the ACJC String Quartet and ACS (Barker
Road)’s singing sensation, Nathan Hartono.
More than a thousand old boys and girls, staff, teachers and
well-wishers filled 108 tables for this year’s celebrations, which
was well orchestrated by the Master of Ceremonies, Leslie Quahe
(Sec 4 Class of 73 & Pre-U Class of 1976). Leslie is seen

ACS Oldham
Hall
ACS
Oldham Hall staged a Founder’s Day Challenge to celebrate
Founder’s Day. The event sought to generate greater esprit de
corps among boarders from CJC Hostel, Dunman High School
Hostel and ACS (Independent) Boarding School.
After sweating it through several rounds of play and urged on
by cheerleaders waving colourful pom-poms, the CJC Boys Team
and the Oldham Hall Girls Team 2 emerged as the winners.

In the same spirit of
our founder Bishop Oldham who offered free tuition to sons of
widows and poor families, ACS Oldham Hall pledged to donate
$1,000 to the Methodist Welfare Services (MWF) Bursary Awards
Fun for each participating hostel. Many students from
low-income families of all races and religions have benefited
from the MWS Bursary Awards annually since 1986. Last year,
274 awards worth over $70,000 were disbursed to needy primary
and secondary school students.

Governors, presenting a cheque for $3,000 to Ms Katy Tay of
the Methodist Welfare Services.
According to Ms Tay, “I am very happy that
through this event, ACS Oldham Hall’s donation of $3,000 will
greatly help the needy students in furthering their
education”.

The Challenge was indeed a great success!
As summed up by one of the organisers, Ms
Magdalene Lim, “We are glad to support the work of MWS in
contributing to the welfare of less fortunate students. In
future Founder’s Day events, we hope to introduce a greater
variety of games and involve more hostels so that we can raise
more money for MWS.”
