26 August 2014 marked an historic day not only for the
ACS (Independent)
rugby team as they claimed their 17
th
‘C’ Division Rugby title, but also the
entire school.
As this was the first time that a school sports final was held at
the new Sports Hub, the entire school went down to support our players!
This entailed the moving of approximately 3,000 staff and students and to
overcome the logistics and costs, 5 MRT trains were specially chartered,
making for a most enjoyable experience- a trip full of laughter and banter.
Once the game got underway, we lost no time in putting pressure on the
opponents, resulting in two converted tries, the first coming off an intercepted
pass, and the second off a break through the Saints’ defensive line.
The Saints came out stronger in the second half and scored a penalty. We
managed a converted try to break the momentum of the advance before
adding yet another one. Just before full time, Saints scored a consolation try, allowing
ACS (Independent) to win with the score of 28-8.
Throughout the match, chants and shouts of “Go AC!” could be heard up and down
the stands. While it was a landmark 17
th
‘C’ Division Rugby title for the school, it was
also much more than that – as our Principal, Mr Winston Hodge said, “Sports is about
bringing people together, about community building and creating shared memories. We
hope that many years from now when our students are themselves parents, they’ll bring
their own children to the Sports Hub and speak of the first time they stepped into the
stadium as part of our school family.”
