CONGRATULATIONS .....
.... to three
prominent ACS Old Boys who were recently honoured at the 2011 National Day Awards for their dedicated services and contributions to Singapore!
Mr Peter Joe Chia Cheong Meng, BBM received The Public Service Star [BBM (Lintang)], while
Mr Eric Teng Heng Chiew and
Mr Alexander Chan Meng Wah were awarded The Public Service Star [BBM].
A former student (ACS Class of 53) and teacher/Vice-Principal of ACS (1955-1995),
Mr Peter Joe Chia has
an impressive track record of community
service dating back to 1971 when he
started volunteering with the Singapore
Children’s Society, of which he is still
an active volunteer. Besides sitting on
numerous committees, Mr Chia was active
in the Methodist Church in Singapore and
the Singapore Scout Association; he had
also served as the Hon. Aide-de-Camp to
the President of Singapore from 1965 to
1970. For his dedication and voluntary
services, Mr Chia received the Public
Service Medal (PBM) in 1984, the Public
Service Star (BBM) in 1992,
and the Public Service Star (BBM
[Lintang]) in 2011.
Mr Eric Teng (ACS Class of 75/77) was recognised for his leadership and contribution to the YMCA of Singapore, where he has been serving since 1985; at the age of 25 then, he was one of its youngest board members. He was President 2005 to 2009 and has continued to be active on the YMCA Board. In 2001, he was also awarded the Public Service Medal (PBM). Currently the CEO (Property & Hospitality) at the Straits Trading Company as well an advisor of the parent organisation, the Tecity Group and the Tan Chin Tuan Foundation, Mr Teng has held leadership positions in various organisations, including a board member of the National Council of Social Service (1998 – 2006) where he headed the committees responsible for developing volunteers; the Tsunami Reconstruction and Facilitation Committee, and the National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre since 2008. He also served as the Honorary Secretary of the ACS OBA from 2004 to 2006.
Mr Alexander Chan Meng Wah (ACS Class of 68/70) was a former national swimmer and a multiple gold medallist at the South-East Asian Peninsular Games. He had served as Chairman of the Singapore Sports Council (SSC) from 2002 to 2010, during which time the SSC oversaw many sporting achievements by Singapore, in both quality and quantity. He played a major role in the planning for and bringing to fruition several key sports projects, such as the new Sports Hub, the organisation of the inaugural Asian Youth Games 2009 and Youth Olympic Games 2010. Mr Chan currently serves as an independent director on the boards of several public and private sector companies.
