After months of painstaking preparation and tracking down long lost
classmates and teachers, 150 members of the ACSS Class of 82
gathered at the Lee Kong Chian Auditorium, Barker Road, for their
25th Anniversary reunion. Also present were 16 of our old teachers.
Many of us had not seen each other since we left ACSS yet it seemed
like Father Time had stood still… everyone treated each other with
ease and familiarity (some say disrespect!), bonded together by the
ACS spirit, where our "hearts, hopes and aims are one".
A memorable evening of bonhomie and cheer ensued, with hearty
feasting in true ACS tradition. “The Way We Were”, a carefully
crafted video montage, started the ball rolling and brought back
many fond memories of yesteryears.
The highlight of the evening was perhaps the opening address by our
former Principal, Mr. Earnest Lau. He emphasized that trust was
probably one of the most significant values ACS had built up over
the years and tried to live up to; that it was also a vital quality
that citizens in the globalised world depended on to function
smoothly, for unless human beings believed in each other, no trade,
no profession, no human relationship indeed, no country could have
survived. He finished his speech (to our standing ovation) by
exhorting us not to forget ACS as our alma mater - the mother
institution that fostered us in our youth – and the values that we
have been nurtured with… In that way, we could be really proud of
the School, our teachers, our friends, and be real assets to society
and to the world. An old boy was later overheard expressing his
gratitude to Mr. Earnest Lau for giving him a second chance and
instilling values that made a difference in his life, without which
he would not be in the happy position he was presently in.
We were also entertained by our most famous alumnus, Adrian Pang and
his “lovely” partner, legal eagle, Adrian Tan (champion debater and
infamous author). They created much hilarity among the crowd with
their witty “emceeing” of the entire night’s events, which included
a lucky draw and auction.
The celebrations came to a close after the school anthem was sung
lustily (amazingly without the help of lyrics!).
Through the generous contributions of our cohort members, a total of
$50,000 was raised for the donation of a classroom at ACS (Barker
Road). We also presented a special goodie bag to each of our dear
teachers who honoured us with their presence.
The reunion was no doubt the Class of 82’s best ever! Our sincere
thanks to all who helped to make the evening a resounding success,
including our generous sponsors of cash and kind (prizes, beer and
wine) to make the evening such a resounding success.
We certainly look forward to our next reunion, which promises to be
even better, as “The Best Is Yet To Be!” |
