ACS Class of 1954's 52th Anniversary

A journey down memory lane ...

It was like stepping out of a time capsule when my wife, Joyce and I made it all the way from the United States to attend the ACS Class of 54’s 52nd Anniversary Dinner at the Kippo Restaurant in Singapore’s Keppel Club on 22 September. After a lapse of 52 years, I was not at all surprised when some classmates could not remember me.

26 loyal Old Boys accompanied by 11 of their spouses were at the reunion, which could well be the first alumni gathering where spouses made their presence felt. Besides me, Anek Singhakowinta from Thailand was the other overseas classmate present. Also present were our guests, Messrs Lee Hah Ing, Lim Choon Mong and Earnest Lau. It was truly amazing to see them still so sprightly and very engaging in conversation reminiscent of the good old days. They were like the “Bunny Energizer” battery in human form!

Following Mr Earnest Lau’s interesting talk about his work as Archivist of the Methodist Church in Singapore, yours truly performed a solo on the violin, accompanied by a full orchestra (on CD). The piece I chose, entitled “Shine on Us”, has a special meaning for us as we head towards becoming the next generation of living vintage ACSians.

Mike Chua then gave his testimony on how to stay healthy with only regular exercise but without any necessary vitamins or life enhancing supplements (Precautionary Advice: consult your doctor first before you trash your supplements).

Another highlight was Dr Bobby Sng’s talk on his Biblical Stamps collection from around the world. His three books depicting stamps of the Old Testament, New Testament and Churches around the world have been published by the Bible Society of Singapore of which he is Chairman. His work is unique and both my wife and I were privileged to be listening to him. He ended the evening by generously giving each ACSian a complementary copy of the stamps of the Story of the Old Testament and for the ladies, the stamps of the Story of Jesus.

The evening was indeed a success, thanks to the hard work of the convenors, Lim Kim Kuay for arranging the sumptuous spread of delightful dishes, Arnold Tan (Class of 53) who accompanied our singing on keyboard, and our photographer H. I. Lim, who is Kim Kuay’s son.

We now look forward to our next reunion, which will be organized by a team headed by Ng Boon Kwang and supported by Malcolm Goh, Kenney Tan and Lim Kim Kuay.
