Our C Division 7’s team staged a
magnificent comeback to beat Raffles
Institution (RI) narrowly by 14-12 to claim
the inaugural National Schools Under-14
Sevens title on 17 April.
Playing in front of 30,000 at the Singapore
National Stadium, our boys were visibly
overawed by the occasion initially. Early
in the first half, they let in a try which was
converted, but Matthew Lim leveled the
score when he ran the length of the field
to equalise just before the break.
In the second half, our boys put up a
brave defence to keep RI at bay until a
defensive lapse allowed RI to score an
unconverted try and take a 12-7 lead with
4 minutes remaining. In the last 2 minutes
of play, they gave their all to create one
more chance which came when Ryan Tan
made a perfect commit and pass to send
Matthew through for the all important try
which he gleefully converted for the title.
This was indeed a most memorable game
which will surely be etched in the memories
of our boys, and also that of the teachers,
coaches, parents, ACS Old Boys and
fellow ACSians who were at the National
Stadium to cheer the boys on.
Another Amazing
Comeback!
Our B Division Rugby team also created one of the biggest upsets in school
rugby history when they beat St Andrew’s Secondary School in the National
Schools B Division Final 2016.
After losing 0-22 in the opening match of the season to St Andrew’s, few
would imagine that our boys could pick themselves up and overturn the early
season setback. The tenacity, grit and teamwork of the entire team resulted
in a well-deserved 17-12 win in sudden death extra time, and won the
hearts of many at the Ministry of Education Physical Education and Sports
Education Branch.
