Bishop Oldham’s
ethos of mentorship and servitude still
burns bright with Oldham Club continuing
to bear the torch.
On an overcast
Saturday, 9 September 2017, Oldham Club
played host to about 60 children from
Hougang, Jurong, Tanjong Pagar and
Monfort Family Service Centres
for a half day of socialising and games
at the Anglo-Chinese Junior College Sports Complex.
The intent
was to expose the children to the
various sports and more importantly, for
them to have a really good time.
It was wonderful to
see the children having fun and enjoying
themselves as they were introduced and
actually got to play rugby, water polo,
badminton and tennis. What was
heartwarming was that we had almost 60
volunteers from Oldham, many of whom are
representing or have represented
Singapore in one sport or other. Even
more heartwarming is the interaction
between the volunteers and the children.
It left no doubt as to who had the
better opportunity to learn and to
benefit more. It was certainly the
Oldham volunteers!
According to Mr Low
Yang Tong, Head of Oldham Club:
“Besides
a day of activities and fun, we had
hoped to share with these wonderful
children that in sports (and in many
other activities as well), once you are
on the field, in the pool or on the
track, sports become the best leveler in
life. All it takes is a stout heart,
courage, perseverance, hard work and
hope. We would like to think that this
message went across well.”
“It is hoped
that this event will be the first of
many other partnerships with the
National Council of Social Services. We
would like to think that everyone on
that Saturday benefitted from the humble
privilege of being able to host, to
impart some values and for these
wonderful kids, perhaps a small insight
and some inspiration that many things
are indeed possible with the right
beliefs and the right values”.
