On Saturday 24th August, ACS (+44)* organised its inaugural
get-together at the Singapore Botanic Gardens for all ACSians
headed to the UK for their higher education. Around 40 freshmen
hailing from ACS (Independent), ACS (International), and ACJC
graced the occasion despite the gloomy weather threatening to
rain on our parade.
It was a very relaxed meet-up and served as a reunion for many
of the young men as they got back in touch with their batch-mates
from school for the first time after 2 years of National Service,
and made the acquaintance of the young ladies who will now
become their classmates as they collectively head off for their
university studies abroad as freshmen. Several seniors, including
the organising team, also lent their support by mingling with the
new crop and sharing their life experiences as students in the UK.
Several chose to seize upon the lush greenery of the Gardens
and enjoyed themselves playing frisbee and football, while
everyone remained welcome to relax and enjoy the snacks and
beverages provided. The lazy late afternoon gathering was a
considerable success considering it was the first (and certainly
not the last) endeavour of its kind in some while.
It was extremely heartening to see so many ACSians freshly
taking up the challenge of going abroad for an education, many
holding scholarships, and pitting themselves against some of
the best and brightest individuals from around the world. This is
amplified by the fact that the actual number of ACSian freshmen
going to the UK this year is over 120, with more than 500 of
our Old Boys and Girls already in the midst of their degrees
on those shores.
The organisers are truly grateful for the support of all who
attended the event or helped to publicise it, with special thanks
to ACS (Independent) for graciously loaning us several School
and House flags to brighten up and boost the ACS feel of the
occasion.
We look forward to continuing to keep the ACS
student community in the UK in close touch as we move off
again for the upcoming academic year abroad and hope to
be of service to every ACSian who approaches us.
To God Be The Glory, The Best Is Yet To Be!
