As the ACS OBA Management Committee
looks towards 2014, we reflect on all that
we have accomplished in the past year
with your support.
2013 was an incredible year with a
good balance of traditional and new
events. We anticipate that 2014 will
be an even more eventful year for the
OBA as we celebrate our centenary. Indeed, the OBA is 100 years young this
July. Please join us on Saturday, July 12th
at the Barker Road campus for a time of
celebration and camaraderie. Details will
be forthcoming soon.
The first quarter of 2013 was a busy one
for the OBA. In February 2013, we had
another ACS- MGS Festive Mixer to ring
in the Lunar New Year at 1 Altitude at
Raffles Place, Singapore’s highest al fresco
bar. Despite the heavy downpour, we
saw approximately 150 alumni attend the
fun-filled evening. This event was quickly
followed by our traditional events such as
the Past vs Present games and our annual
Founder’s Day Dinner on March the 1st
at Orchard Hotel and our AGM held a
few weeks after.
On Saturday, August 3rd 2013, the ACS
OBA hosted the 2nd ONE ACS Career
Forum at ACS (Independent) for over
1,000 students, parents, alumni and staff
of Anglo-Chinese Junior College, ACS
(Barker Road), ACS (Independent) and
ACS (International). This year’s ONE ACS
Career Forum welcomed over 50 ACSian
speakers from 9 different professions
speaking on 5 simultaneous panels over 3
time slots. In addition to the more traditional
panels of Law, Medicine, Banking &
Finance, Engineering and Accounting,
we introduced Media, Entrepreneurship,
Communications, and the Civil Service.
This format was designed specially to give
students greater choice and increase the
interaction with the speakers in smaller
interest groups.
The attendance was overwhelming, and
from the feedback that the organizers
received, both students and parents
found the candor of the panelists to
be insightful, thought-provoking AND
entertaining! For all of the speakers, it
was an opportunity to reconnect with
other ACSians across the generations and
refresh school connections.
The OBA also hosted Retired Teachers’
Day Tribute Dinner on September 1st
at ACS (Barker Road) for the retired
teachers of the ACS family. As always,
it was a heart-warming time of fellowship
and memories. And of course, ACS-style
networking was in full gear on October
22nd when we gathered at Que Pasa on
Emerald Hill for an evening of camaraderie
and drinks.
We ACSians hold dear so many wonderful
traditions that build our community. As the
year progresses, you can expect more
events from us, as well as some exciting
new initiatives that will deepen our bonds
and strengthen your connection to ACS.
In the meantime, we invite you to look
out for our emails, attend our events,
engage with other ACSians on https://
www.facebook.com/groups/acsoba/
and encourage your fellow ACSians to
join you in participating in our activities,
joining the OBA or even volunteer to be
part of a sub-committee. By participating
in any of these activities, you’ll feel
closer to ACS and be reminded of
the extraordinary blessing of an ACS
education.
