"Life's a cycle. We've come a full cycle after 50 years,
only
to meet again, to start a new cycle" - Dr Loke Loo Pin

It has been 50 years since the former students from the Pre-U Science Classes of 1962 bade farewell to the Alma Mater to pursue their own careers and interests. That was ages ago. But thanks to the patience and perseverance of
Dr Loke Loo Pin, the cohort got together for the first time to celebrate its Golden Anniversary on 04 October 2012.
A dentist by profession, Loo Pin is widely known for her role as ASP Pang in MediaCorp’s “Triple Nine” TV drama series in the mid-nineties. Using her ‘investigative skills’, she spent late nights and endless hours on the computer to track down her former classmates. Her efforts were well worth while as it ended with an “unequivocal, decibel-defying, glorious reunion”. What a night it was!
“However, the heartache comes when you find that so many have passed on, and so many are too ill or having treatment, and thus too weak to come”, according to Loo Pin.
Everyone just wanted to reconnect with each other and they chatted and reminisced like a bunch of young school kids again. Among those present were Rany and Belinda from London, Kian Choon from Toronto, Arthur and Alan from Melbourne, and Irene from Penang. As laughter and animated exchanges punctuated the room, Julian gamely entertained with his 60’s music on the keyboard.
The time flew by so quickly that before you could say "Who are you, hah?" to the next person, it was time to sing the School anthem, Auld Lang Syne, and Now is the Hour.
During the last song, everyone spontaneously linked hands and we all stood up and joined hands forming a big circle. At that moment, Loo Pin had an epiphany. This was it.....the closure she wanted. The natural formation of a circle was the metaphor for life.
Life is a circle. Yes, we have come a full circle after 50 years, only to meet again, to start a new circle.
As goodbyes were said and hugs exchanged, someone came from behind and whispered to Loo Pin, “Do it again in two years’ time, and I’ll underwrite the whole thing”.
“When I turned around, he was gone in a flash. Just like the six months of my life this year!” Loo Pin reflected philosophically. |
