2011 Reflections
by Benson Puah, President, ACS OBA
2011 was an exciting and busy year for the ACS family,
particularly for the ACS OBA.
Besides organising many of the alma mater’s 125th
Anniversary events, the OBA initiated a couple of social
events which were well-received by its members.
The year kicked-off with a Lunar New Year social
gathering of more than 70 Old Boys and Old Girls from
cohorts ranging from 1956 to 2010 at Sarang at Orchard
Central. This was closely followed by the Past vs
Present Games on 27 February which traditionally precede
our Founder’s Day celebrations.
Some 9,000 students, staff, alumni and guests were at
the Singapore Indoor Stadium on 01 March for the
ACS
Combined Thanksgiving Service to celebrate Founder’s Day
and 125 glorious years of our school’s history. After
the service, the occasion ended on a high note with an
entertaining “ACS Got Talent” competition which
showcased the talents from all our six schools.
Over 1,250 members of the ACS family and guests
continued with the celebrations later that evening at
the 125th ACS Founder’s Day Dinner held at
the Suntec
Convention Centre Ballroom.
Rev Dr Norman Wong and Nathan
Hartono were wonderful Masters of Ceremony and as
always, the evening was entertaining and most enjoyable.
Barely 3 weeks following the completion of our landmark
Founder’s Day celebrations, the OBA collaborated with
ACJC and co-hosted the ACJC-OBA Careers Talk on 26 March
that featured four distinguished alumni who are leaders
in their respective fields of Banking, Law, Accounting
and Medicine.
The first-ever ACS OBA and MGS Alumnae Association
Social Mixer event on 09 July was a huge success.
Through the power of social media and by word-of-mouth,
about 200 alumni from the ACS and MGS families descended
upon the hip
and trendy ACSian-owned Balaclava at ION
Orchard for an evening of inter-school and multi-cohort
networking.
The
ACS 125 Sports Festival on 05 August was the final
event to complete the 125th
Anniversary
celebrations. All the six units of the ACS family of
schools participated in this event to showcase the ACS
sporting tradition.
Still on the sporting front, I am pleased that ACS OBA’s
Oldham Club continues to do the school proud with
convincing and spirited play in both the Championship
and Conference Rugby Leagues organized by the Singapore
Rugby Union.
The last quarter of the year saw the OBA host a special
Retired Teachers’
Celebration Dinner on Teachers’ Day,
01 September at the ACS (Barker Road) campus. A great
time was had by both the retired staff as well as Old
Boys who came in full force to pay tribute to their dear
teachers.
As we look forward to the New Year, I encourage all
ACSians to keep the ACS flag flying high, support the
activities of the OBA and come forward to volunteer
your
time, effort and ideas.
As always, The Best Is Yet To Be!
