The
third instalment of the ACS Old Boys Touch Rugby
Carnival, back after a one year break, was held
on the 25 October 2008 at ACS (Independent). It
was the largest competition ever held with a
total of 16 teams compared to 10 and 8 teams in
the previous instalments. Students from the ACS
schools took to the field to challenge the Old
Boys for the Tan Wah Thong Challenge Shield. The
carnival atmosphere allowed for great
sportsmanship and building of friendships as
girls, boys and Old boys alike marvelled at the
skill displayed by players with ages ranging
from 13 to 50.
Players from the schools provided stiff
competition with their youthful exuberance and
pure energy whilst some of the teams depended on
experience to manoeuvre their way into the knock
out stages. Rugby legends like Tang Kee Fei,
Boon Swan Heng and many others stood up well
against the challenges posed by the younger
generations. One statistic that stood out at
this carnival compared to the last was the
average age which fell from 26 at the previous
carnival to 19. It was encouraging as it implied
a greater participation from the younger
generation of Old Boys but also a mixing between
the school-going population and the Old Boys.
The
grand finals was played out by the defending
champions, Tan Chin Tuan and Cipriani, which
contained some of the best rugby talents that
ACS has produced. The game was a tight technical
affair with very little to separate between the
2 teams as both teams exhibited the talent and
discipline that got them so far in this tough
one day event. A solitary try by Bryan Ng was
the difference and Cipriani, led by captain
Daniel Chia, were deserving victors by 1-0 as
they were showcasing some very nice touches and
ideas throughout the duration of the event.
Our
Guest of Honour, Mr Tan Wah Thong (seen
here on the left with the Challenge Shield)
was present to celebrate the success of the
event as well as to give out the Tan Wah Thong
Challenge Shield to the victorious team.
Congratulations to the winning team Cipriani.
