ACS Class of 1951's 55th Anniversary

The Amazing Class of 51!

The tie that binds the ACS Class of 51 is truly amazing. After more than fifty-five years, the class still keeps in touch with each other and meets ever so often to share the treasured memories of yesteryears. This is indeed a fine example for the younger cohorts to follow.

It all started in 1981 when Sng Cheok Kye and Pang Leong Siang successfully organised the first get-together at the Plaza Hotel. Little did they realise then that what they had initiated would continue unabated for 25 years.

In all, there have been 10 reunions so far. Reunion #10 took place recently, aptly on 10 October (double ten). Here to share the happy occasion with us is Sng Cheok Kye, the driving force behind the organisation of the reunions:

The Class of 51’s Reunion#10 on 10 October 2006 was held in the cozy home of Dato and Datin Pang at 3 White House Park. The highlight of the occasion was the presence of two lost souls who finally surfaced after an absence of 55 years. We were delighted to reconnect with them, and would have kissed them if they had been girls!

Three old boys with the aid of walking sticks attended the Reunion with their spouses in tow. It was a highly spirited jamboree of our really old cohort as over dinner, grandfathers (ages ranged between 73 and 78) teased, reminisced and pulled one another’s legs. Loud laughter prevailed throughout the evening. They shared medical concerns. They dreamed of lost youthful exuberance. They discussed societal and current world issues in measured terms. C’est la vie!

These candid photographs captured all the magical moments of our friendships fostered more than 55 years. Uniquely ACS, without a doubt in our golden years.

In all past Reunions, we were restricted by the anatomy of time. Reunion #10 was no exception. Invariably, a few items were left untouched. The majority of us do look forward to our next Reunion #11 in 2007, when we will rekindle and share our joys, hopes and dreams.

The Best is Yet to Be!

Sng Cheok Kye

The ACS Spirit truly transcends time and distance as Cheok Kye experienced recently. After a lapse of 55 years, he finally managed to track down and meet up with an old classmate, Dr Eric Choo Poh Boon, in Melbourne. Only ACSians would go to such lengths to stay connected – a trait we are all proud about! Eric now hopes to visit Singapore in the coming years.

Such is the power of connectivity!
