The above lines from “The Best Is Yet To Be”, a song specially
composed by Professor Robert Gay, aptly sums up the sentiments of
cohorts from the Class of 59/61 when they gathered at the Copthorne
Kings Hotel on Friday 29 October 2004 for their reunion dinner.
Although 45 years has lapsed since 1959, the ACS spirit still fired
up the sprightly sexagenarians as they sang the verses (click
here for the lyrics) with gusto and emotion.
It was perhaps
one of the best and most enjoyable reunions for the Class of 59/61.
Besides a slide show that evoked memories of some of the best years
of our lives, there was so much fun and laughter as classmates (some
you would never imagine would let their hair down in the fashion
they did!) went on stage to provide our own brand of wholesome
entertainment.
Professor Robert
Gay’s rousing song brought tears to some. Dr Michael Yap almost
brought the house down with his hilarious stand up act. Ernest Heng
and the Three Amigos (Ronnie Kwok, Sonny Lim and Leslie Lau)
sang like professionals when they entertained us with several
numbers, whilst Percy Tan and Elaine Chia captivated the audience
with a duet. Last but not least, our comedians Dr Allan Ng and Mike
Chan showed their true colours when they shared their brand of
humour with us. With such talents, the Class of 59/61 could have
easily staged a musical and comedy extravaganza ala Broadway style!
On a more
serious note, Michael Hwang paid tribute to our dear teachers who
taught and encouraged us. We remember these teachers with gratitude
for the role they played in nurturing us to be what we are today.
All in all, it
was indeed a glorious evening of camaraderie but alas it ended too
soon with “Till We Meet Again”. Many reluctantly took their leave
promising to stay in touch and to continue the amazing ACS bond that
ties us together. Some remained behind to chat away and relive the
good old days over coffee. Yet others, inspired by the evening’s
celebrations, have volunteered to be involved in the organization of
the next grand reunion.
Until then, “The
Best Is Yet To Be”!
