2003 has been a rather turbulent and
challenging year. Many of us are glad that it is over. As we welcome 2004
with a sense of hope, we set goals and laudable resolutions, which sadly
are no sooner forgotten time and again.

      On a personal note, I
plan to make this year different by taking a positive stance in my
commitments and not allow distractions and dream-stealers sway me away
from achieving my goals. Having come thus far to welcome the year 2004, I
count my blessings and endorse the advice in Mr Peter Tan’s message:
“Taking a positive attitude would result in a positive outcome”,
for “if we take a negative attitude towards what we do, the
outcome of our life would be negative”.

History has on record that many a great men
have had their share of adversities in life, yet they persevered to
overcome the odds to contribute richly to the world. For example, Thomas
Edison was so bad in his studies that his teachers said he was too stupid
to ever learn anything. Walt Disney was once fired because his boss
thought he lacked good ideas. Caruso was told by one of his music teachers
that he could not sing. And Albert Einstein caused considerable concern to
his parents because he could not speak until he was four and was not able
to read until he was seven! The world could be quite a different one if
these men did not have the inner strength to face and overcome their
      initial obstacles.
