EDITORIAL:  Down Memory Lane

ACS CrestWhen I was asked to be the Editor of the ECHO recently, it took little persuasion for me to accept the honour as I welcomed the opportunity to forge closer ties with the alma mater that inspired, moulded and enriched my life and members of my family. All my siblings and both my sons schooled at ACS, and I hope some day my grandchildren too.

Although it was more than 40 years ago since I left ACS to face the challenges of working life, I remember my student days well - the trials and joys of growing up, the treasured moments (some hilarious), the camaraderie and the teachers (some unforgettable). I recall being engrossed by the lessons and experiences of Dr Thio Chan Bee (the Principal then) at Sunday school classes, which were held in the school auditorium and classrooms, as Barker Road Methodist Church did not exist then. I was particularly attentive, for often Dr Thio's experiences during World War 2, as recounted in his book, "Extraordinary Adventures of An Ordinary Man", included someone dear to me - my late father.

Whilst preparing this issue of the ECHO, I had cause tostep into the five ACS institutions the past few weeks. It was indeed a nostalgic walk down memory lane, and I was truly impressed by what I saw and experienced. Barker Road may have changed dramatically, but the ACS Spirit still permeates through the entire campus.

In our cover story, six of our students share their aspirations and dreams for the New Year. Also featured in this issue is Dr M. Jegathesan, an old ACSian who dared to dream lofty dreams that led him to be an Olympian and "the fastest man in Asia".

I wish you good health, success and happiness in the New Year.
