A school is a school is a school. Or is it?
The Parent Support Group (PSG) of ACS (Barker Road) is committed to collaborating with the school on
programmes and projects for the benefit of the students. Under the Family @ Barker banner, members
of the PSG sacrifice much of their time and effort working hand-in-hand with the school in a myriad of
activities that promote family values, moral awareness, social decorum and leadership. Their active participation
goes a long way to enrich the school environment and demonstrates to the students how they can grow
and become better and more effective servant-leaders. Below are just some of the ongoing activities.
Nourishing the soul
The Fathers’ Prayer Group meets on the 3rd Saturday of each month to pray together for the school and families. At these sessions, members support, share, encourage and inspire each other to live God-fearing lives as husbands and fathers.

Parents also gather at the Friday Morning Prayer weekly to pray for all aspects of the school and to provide support and fellowship for each other.

Nourishing the body
Food Ministry at the 2013 East Coast RunOnce a term, members of the Food Ministry volunteer their time and talents to cook and serve the students in the school.
Besides showing love and concern for the students’ physical needs, the objective of this tradition is also to demonstrate the meaning of ‘servanthood’. Another Barker tradition are the Exam Tea Sessions where parents provide daily refreshments for 4 weeks to the boys during the consultation period prior to the Cambridge exams.
Dads for Life @ Barker
The objective of this group is to inspire, mobilise and involve fathers to become influencers in their children’s lives .... for life.
Special events such as cross country runds and overseas community involvement trips are organised to provide opportunities for father and sons to rediscover and bond with each other.

Moulding characters
Parent facilitators being briefed before lessonInitiated by the PSG in 2002, the Lighthouse Ministry develops and moulds ACS gentlemen to become men of character by reinforcing the school’s values of Respect, Integrity, Commitment and Excellence (RICE). Comprising 7 lessons of 2 hours each, the development programme covers topics such as peer pressure, family relationships, teamwork and more.

Support, support, support!
The PSG plays a very active role in supporting the school’s programmes, be it cheering on our boys on the sports field or swimming pool, planning celebrations in honour of our teachers or organising School Family Education (SFE) programmes for the benefit of students, teachers and parents. Many work untiringly behind the scenes to attract and engage parent volunteers to join them serve the school, while others do a great job in creating print and online contents to promote Family@Barker activities – all in the spirit of enriching the ACS brand of education for the students. As one parent puts it, "It is a joy and a privilege to serve and grow as a family. The camaraderie and friendship is what binds us together. For every parent that you see at any event, there are at least 2 more volunteers working behind the scenes to make it a success!” .
