As a true blue ACSian, Daryl Tam hailed from ACPS (1985), ACS (1989) and ACJC (1991). He was active in Cadet Scouts in ACPS, in NCC (Land) in ACS and the Students’ Council Exco in ACJC. He is married to Josephine and has two children; a son in P1 in ACS(Primary) and a daughter in P2 in MGS.
Here’s his inspiring story of how he turned from unfit to super fit.
“When I turned 35, kind souls teased that I was looking “prosperous” and I realised that my wardrobe selections were literally becoming ‘wider’. I noted that I was falling sick often and could not get myself to voluntarily do anything involving perspiration. The final straw was when I almost failed a physical fitness test in front of my peers; something which I used to ace when I was in OCS. Embarrassed, looking for a plan to redeem my battered pride and remembering that ACSians could do anything if they set their minds to it, I signed up for a sprint triathlon. Leveraging those rusty swimming skills from lessons from days of yore in the Shaw Pool, I survived the cycling and running legs by sheer stubbornness (also an ACS trait although we now call it ‘determination’ in a more Politically Correct world)."
"The sense of achievement was exhilarating, so I challenged myself to a marathon and a few local half-ironman events. Fast forward to today, I have completed three Ironman and three half-ironman events, and will be trying for my fourth Ironman in Hokkaido, Japan as this article goes to print. So to all those who think they can’t: You certainly can. Because it’s in our ACSian blood to push harder, reach further and hold fast our enduring motto -
The Best is Yet to Be!” |
