Not just one, but TWO national under-14 relay records were
smashed by our “ONE ACS” swimmers at the recent 8th Singapore
National Swimming Championships 2012 organised by the
Singapore Swimming Association (SSA)!
On the night of 11 August, our swimmers, Brilliant Chua Wei Feng
(ACSP 2011, ACSI Year 1), Dylan Koo Long Hai (ACSJ 2011,
ACSI Year 1), Darren Lim Fang Yue (ACSJ 2010, ACS (BR) Year
2), Kevin Ong Jit Eng (ACSP 2010, ACSI Year 2), shattered the
long standing 4 x 100 metres Freestyle Relay record of 3 minutes
50.88 seconds set in 2001 with a remarkable time of 3 minutes
42.80 seconds. After a full day of competing individually and
for their respective swim clubs, the four boys gathered as ONE
ACS team for a race against the clock. They swam superbly with
determination and all of them registered personal best times for
the distance.
After the record breaking feat, Kevin declared
excitedly, “This record is really unique in a
sense that the four of us, from different
classes, ACS schools, swim clubs and ages, could
unite as ACSians to achieve such great
heights!”.
“Never give up on something you
really want. It’s difficult to wait, but worse
to regret”, Darren added.
Less than 16 hours later in the late morning of 12 August, the same
team went on to clip 1.58 seconds off the old 4 x 100 metres
Medley Relay record set in 2009 with a time of 4 minutes 05.55
seconds. Kevin led off with backstroke, followed by Brilliant in
breastroke, Dylan in butterfly and Darren in freestyle. Despite this
being the fourth straight day of competition and weariness setting
in, each of the boys dug deep and gave all that they had.
Elated with another record breaking achievement, Brilliant
exclaimed “The harder you train, the more you achieve in
competitions” while Dylan aptly summed up the thoughts of all the
boys when he said “I am very proud that we, the ONE ACS team,
did it! It was an amazing experience and I am very honoured
and happy to be part of this great family and legacy. We could
not have done it without the support and blessings of our schools,
coaches and parents. The Best is Yet to Be!”
As the event is a national championship and not
an inter-school meet, our boys swam under the
“Combined Schools” banner. However, since all
the members of the relay team are from ACS,
the
team has been renamed "The Anglo-Chinese Schools” in the
official SSA record books.
CONGRATULATIONS,
Boys!
You have done the ACS family proud!
