If
you want to know what life in ACS was like half a
century ago, you should get your hands on "
Sheaf
of Memories", a commemorative
publication that chronicles the lives and times of
ACSians and teachers in the ACS Class of '51 era.
Comprising a collection of reminiscences and
light-hearted anecdotes, "Sheaf of Memories" is
about the achievements and challenges of the Class
of '51 students, many of whom have risen to
prominent positions in the community and business
circles. The publication also pays tribute to the
dedicated and caring teachers who shaped the
students' lives.
Life for students in the early fifties was very
different compared to what it is now. According to
the publication's editor,
Mr Sng Cheok
Kye, "
Unlike what our
grandchildren enjoy now, there was no television,
Internet and computer games to amuse us. Yet we
found great joy and camaraderie in simple pleasures
such as swimming, badminton, chess, cycling and
fishing, and for some, even bodybuilding!"
Like all true-blue ACSians, the students from the
Class of '51 are passionately loyal to their alma
mater. Even after leaving school and going their
separate ways more than five decades ago, they have
remained in touch till this day through periodic
formal reunion dinners (
five grand ones so far,
to be exact!) and regular informal social
gatherings.
"
Our education in ACS is not just about
acquiring knowledge and passing exams. It is also
about character building and loyalty, from which we
developed the extraordinary ACS spirit and lasting
relationships", Mr Sng added.
