The
spirit that unites ACSians is extraordinary. Observers
outside the family have described it as 'awesome', and
indeed it is. Even long after leaving school and going
their separate ways, faithful old classmates still meet
regularly to keep in touch, network, and to enjoy the
journey down memory lane.
Earlier this year, the Class of '63's "Forty Years
On" Reunion Dinner was a huge success, and so was
the "50th Anniversary Dinner" of the Class of '52 in
October last year. The Class of '55, which has its
Reunion Dinner every five years, will meet again on 25
August 2003. Others like the Class of '59 meet monthly
for lunch or dinner, and are now already preparing for a
grand 45th Anniversary Reunion Dinner next year.
The Class of '51 is another good example of the
remarkable bond that ACS students are known for. After
five successful Reunion Dinners (1981, 1986, 1991, 1998
& 2000) and regular informal get-togethers, this group
of septuagenarians has just produced a commemorative
publication "Sheaf of Memories", a collection
of nostalgic anecdotes and events that happed more than
half a century ago.
It was heartening to witness the solidarity in the ACS
family during the SARS outbreak. The initiative taken by
a group of parents from ACS (Junior) to help canteen
vendors during the difficult period, and the efforts by
ACJC's Student Councillors to raise contributions for
the Courage Fund by using their musical talents, are not
only commendable, but speak volumes for the ACS Spirit
in a time of crisis. We salute all teachers, parents,
students and old boys who rose to the occasion!
Whilst researching for this issue's cover story, I was
amazed that the ACS family has produced so many
Olympians and international level sportsmen and
sportswomen. Here again, it is evident that the unique
ACS Spirit, the dedication of teachers and old boys, and
strong parental and peer support, are the factors
contributing to our impressive track record.
As we move forward, we expect changes and will adapt
accordingly to meet the challenges of tomorrow. But one
thing will never change, and that is the inimitable ACS
Spirit!
We'll stand together for the cause of ACS Foever!
